Questions for Law Students and Recruiters
Here are some suggestions (come up with a set that is unique to you) for questions to ask current law students and admissions representatives about their institutions:
- What is total enrollment and how has that changed over the last five years?
- How many applications were received last year?
- from which undergraduate institutions?
- for how many spaces?
- how many were accepted?
- Are you happy as a student here? Do other students seem to be happy with the institution?
- Characterize the climate for women/LGBTQ/minority students on campus.
- who constitutes the minority student population on campus?
- What types of scholarship aid are available?
- Financial aid questions:
- how do students finance their legal education?
- how do they arrange for repayment of loans?
- does the institution provide loan assistance or other programs for students who take public interest jobs?
- Does the institution have cut-off points for the GPA or LSAT?
- Is prior graduate work helpful in terms of an application?
- Is time away from school after college a good idea?
- What do you consider valuable work experience for students applying a few years after graduation from college?
- Will graduating early play a role in the admissions decision?
- Do you grant deferred admission?
- How important are letters of recommendation?
- How important are extra-curricular activities?
- What special academic programs are offered?
- What clinical programs exist?
- What are the institution’s strengths and weaknesses?
- Where did you work after your first year of law school?
- How helpful is the job placement office?
- What percentage of graduates find law-related jobs in law within a year of earning the JD?
- In which firms/agencies/etc. (specifically) did last year’s graduating class find employment?
- what portion goes into private practice, government, or public interest?
- Where (geographically) is last year’s class currently practicing?
